"When he had given thanks," Luke 22:19.
Who gave thanks? Jesus. What was the occasion? The Memorial Day dinner. What was being remembered? Passover. When Death passed through Egypt slaughtering boys and men. When Israelites dabbed their doorways with lamb's blood. When Death passed over leaving those houses intact. When God delivered Israel from slavery. What did Jesus give thanks for? For God's deliverance, of course! But for what right then? For bread. The Memorial Day dinner bread. Jesus gave thanks to God for the bread by which eating we remember his sacrifice to deliver us from eternal condemnation because of our fault to live forever in the sky kingdom with the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world and with his God who is blessed forever and ever. Amen. Jesus gave thanks. To God. For his own sacrifice.
With a brother or sister today, we remember the Lord of life who died for our sins, and not for ours only but for the sins of the whole world. Who lives forever, now resurrected. And, together, remembering, eating the bread of life and drinking from the cup of the covenant, we give thanks.
