"We had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel," Luke 24:21.
Who's We in that verse? Two men walking along the road. Who was the he they hoped was the one? Jesus of Nazareth. Why did they hope he was the one? because he was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people. Why was their hope dashed down? because three days ago their chief priests, and their rulers, condemned him to death and killed him on a cross. So who's the unrecognized man these two were explaining to? A travelling fellow that had joined their journey. Who's the fellow? Jesus of Nazareth. Very much alive. (Again!) Who, breaking bread with them, they finally recognized beyond joy.
We break bread with a brother or sister today invited by Christ dwelling among us. And, together, in thanksgiving, we celebrate our Redeemer, the hope not only of Israel, but of the whole world!
